Carel, Coulis, Pfefferkorn

THIERRY GOLDBERG PROJECTS presents a three-person show with work by Sari Carel, Holly Coulis, and Kerstin Pfefferkorn. The work included in the show centers on anonymous figures, fictitious characters and unknown individuals, all of which are portrayed in a manner that blurs the distinction between historical reference, fading memory, and the imagined past.

Holy Coulis’ dreamlike paintings of moments frozen in time are reminiscent of vintage film stills. The characters depicted in the paintings seem to be somewhat nonchalant about their own existence, sitting in their living room, standing in a landscape, facing the viewer or looking away. The whimsical situations they tend to find themselves in and their self-aware expression transcend the sort of familiarity found in old family albums.

Kerstin Pfefferkorn’s intimate portraits of unknown men reference vintage photographs, children books and old medical journals as a way to reflect on her teenage years in East Germany. Pfefferkorn also explores the language of painting and the boundary between portraiture and abstraction. Her small close-ups and cropped heads, painted in egg tempera on wood, examine ideas like the architectural aspect of an expression and the anatomy of a gaze.

Sari Carel’s new project titled “Don’t Look Back” is a series of digital collages that utilizes photography and drawing. Carel brings together images from a variety of sources to explore the impact of visual culture. Samples from traditional Japanese drawings or portraits of anonymous businessmen are mixed and matched with random landscapes and snapshots of buildings. Bits and pieces of narratives that don’t necessarily belong together are placed alongside one another and morph into something new.

Sari Carel lives and works in New York. She received her BFA in painting from The Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem, Israel, and her MFA from Hunter college in New York. Her work has been exhibited at Artists’ Space, New York; The Stundars Museum and Cultural Center, Solf, Finland; Beit Haomanim, Tel Aviv, Israel; Marc Selwyn Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Sixtyseven Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Momenta Art, Brooklyn, NY; and Ten In One Gallery, New York, NY.

Kerstin Pfefferkorn lives and works in Leipzig, Germany. She holds a BFA from the Fachhochschule Heiligendamm and currently works on her master’s degree with Neo Rauch at the Hochschule für Graphik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, Germany. Her work has been exhibited at Galerie Antje Wachs, Berlin, Germany; Galerie Kabinett, Bern, Switzerland; Altenburger Rathaus Galerie, Altenburge Land; Germany, and Interim Ausstellungsraum, Leipzig, Germany.

Holly Coulis lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She holds a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design, and an MFA from the Boston Museum School. Her work has been exhibited in solo shows at Cherry and Martin Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Groeflin Maag Galerie, Basel, Switzerland; Greener Pastures in Toronto, Canada; and at LFL Gallery in New York, as well as in group shows at Artemis Greenbereg Van Doren Gallery, Sean Kelly Gallery; Sixtyseven Gallery; and Fredericks Freiser Gallery in New York; Mark Moore Gallery, Santa Monica; Champion Fine Art, Culver City; and Sandroni Rey Gallery in Los Angeles, CA.
